Routara
LLM API · COST CONTROL / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Estimate an LLM API request before choosing a model

A low advertised input price is not the whole cost of a request. Output tokens, model choice, route availability, and actual usage matter. Use the current Routara catalog and the response usage fields; this page deliberately does not freeze prices that may change.

01

Find a currently available model

Open the Routara model catalog and select a model with an active route. Note the exact model ID and the current input and output prices per million tokens. Price displays are estimates until a request is billed.

02

Estimate a bounded test

Estimate cost as (input tokens × input price + output tokens × output price) / 1,000,000 when both prices use per-million-token units. For example, 1,000 input and 200 output tokens cost 0.001 × the input rate plus 0.0002 × the output rate. Other media units need their own formula.

03

Verify actual usage

Send one request with a small max_tokens limit. Compare the response usage, model, and account activity with the estimate. If an account has no eligible trial allowance, add funds before testing; avoid repeated retries against a billing error.

Before you ship

  • Do not compare image or video units with per-token text prices.
  • Confirm prices again when deploying; provider rates can change.
  • Use response usage and account records to validate the estimate.
